Lorraine Jones: A Goddess of Norwood

January 26th, 2010 by Voxx

Lorraine-Power-Jones-GoddessAs I write this post, a dearly loved, lifelong friend is transforming herself into an angel. I feel this is the final physical goal of a well-lived life. My friend, Lorraine Powers Jones was one of my mother’s best friends. This post is for her, and I hope she will hear it read to her by her only son, Gary. I hope there are still a few grains of sand left in the hourglass …

Lorraine has always been what I considered to be the ideal woman. Elegant, tasteful, intelligent, friendly, and seriously fierce. She is a dutiful, loving mother, and a successful businesswoman, getting to the top of the ladder on her own terms.

My memories of her include so many wonderful times. My sister and I would play with her children Joni and Gary, who are still dear friends. I remember playing games on her front porch from dawn until dusk. One afternoon I was playing on the porch and banged my head on the iron-railing — it was Lorraine who came out and went with me and my mother to go to the doctor.

Everyone in the neighborhood would go to the McClain’s house to ride go-carts, and watch the illegal fireworks. I remember the endless “Girls’ Nights”, when Lorraine and all the other women of the neighborhood would come over and play Bridge all night, filling our house with laughter.

Lorraine had another great friend who lived one house over to the East — Shirley Brooks. The two of them were born under the Astrological sign of Virgo; and they used to giggle about secrets no one else knew. They were inseparable, and they always came over together through the front door, looking for my mother and her book of Dreams. It was a morning ritual, Lorraine, Shirley and my mother in the kitchen eating coffee cake and drinking coffee, laughing and gossiping about the details of their lives.

I remember Lorraine as the tall, graceful lady of the neighborhood. I always thought she should have been a model. I suppose she really is a model in her own way, and always has been. Lorraine certainly proved she’s a model of grace under pressure. She was always there for my mother, until her dying day; taking my mother who was terminally ill with cancer, to the hospital for emergencies in the middle of the night — bringing my mother food and medicine, and most of all, her loving and helpful way. Lorraine is a true original Southern Belle, in all its most positive meanings.

Oh, Lorraine … as I write these words, you are still here with us. Remember how much you are loved and cherished. And how all of us are at your side right now, at least in spirit. You are the final original Matriarch of our hometown neighborhood of Norwood. We are honored to have been a part of your life, and we’ve been so lucky to know you.

To me, you will always be the Last Goddess of Norwood. The beautiful, graceful Virgo with the strength to carve out a life for yourself, without leaving anyone behind. I am grateful as well that I was able to speak with you on Christmas, and that my father got to tell you how much he loves you.

I suppose, all I can do now is wait to hear that you’ve gotten your wings, and that you are free from any and all pain. I wish your transformation was easier, but I know the result will be one beautiful angel, that’s for sure. Please remember how much you are, and will always be loved, and how your leaving us will leave a void that will never be filled.

And please don’t be afraid … my mother Claire and Shirley are waiting for you, looking forward to seeing their best friend again. How can there ever be anything but laughter in heaven when you three get together? I love you Lorraine, thanks for sharing your gift of life with all of us. We’re sure going to miss you!

I will light a candle for you, and say prayers for your peaceful passage to the heavenly realm. Please watch over us, as you always have. And be glad that all of the neighborhood children have found each other again. God bless you, Lorraine.

Love,
Voxx, and the Family xoxo

    My dear friend Voxx,

    Last night a very dear friend of mine (actually one who is like a second father for me), an old man who was a Kamikaze pilot in the Second World War passed away. Today i did lit my candles and prayed for him.

    I think both of us are in a very similar mood now.

    My sincere thoughts and prayers are with him and your friend. May they be in peace and light.

    The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
    He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
    He leadeth me beside the still waters.
    He restoreth my soul:
    He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’ sake.

    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
    Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
    Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
    Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
    and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

    Dearest Voxx, I have had the delightful pleasure of working with Lorraine and getting to know her these past 3-4 yrs. I wish I would have had the privilege of knowing her years longer, she is an amazing lady and you have definitely described her so well. It is a true blessing to have known her and been able to gain wisdom from her vast knowledge. She is truly loved. My prayer is for Lorraine and her family, that their joy in having been blessed to spend all these years with her will hold precious memories and allow her to go in peace to her heavenly home where we will all someday be reunited. Thank You Voxx for sharing these wonderful memories.

    Voxx,

    I have never met you, however I feel I know you very well. I am Gary’s wife and I want you to know what an impact you and your sisters have had on Gary and Lorraine. This post has deeply touched all of us and has helped us face what is coming, it is a true portrayal of Lorraine. Lorraine is a very special and wonderful mother-in-law whom I treasure and love very deeply. As you know, Gary has many of the same characteristics of his mother, they share a very special bond that I admire and respect. This is horribly hard on Gary and I just want you to know that you have helped ease his pain and for this I want to thank you very much. I look forward to meeting you and listening to some of the fun stories you guys can share. Thank you again for the love and support you have shown my mother-in-law and my husband.

    Love and Peace,

    Jenifer Jones

    Dear friends, I just found out that Lorraine has gotten her wings and on her way to soar with the angels. I know that everyone who knows Lorraine and the family has mixed emotions. Heartbroken, to not have her here with us, relieved that she isn’t suffering. I am soo thankful for the short time that I shared Lorraines prescence. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you in this time of rejoicing and sorrow.
    Thank you for your kindness and blessed words.

    Dear Gary, I am honored and humbled to have been a part of your Mother’s Divine Transformation! I could feel everything she could not say — that she loves us all, and will always be watching over us. I am so glad that thru our mothers’ love you and your family, mine and our brother Tony will all be together again, never to part! Love and Hugs to you during this most spiritual time in our lives. Hello Voxx, we only met a time or two a very long time ago. Gary told me about your calls to Lorraine and what a precious gift they were to her. The memories you shared here of Aunt Lorraine are a gift to us.

    I remember your mom and Shirley, and the picture of them together again is definitely one that I’ll treasure.
