The great poet, Maya Angelou passed away today on the New Moon in Gemini.
She was an amazing person who lived a full life, and shared her wisdom with us for a great part of it.
I would like to share one of my favorite poems she wrote, along with a link to a recording of Maya reading it aloud. Click on the above link to read more of her work. Maya, you will be missed. ~V~
Phenomenal Woman
By Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size  Â
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,  Â
The stride of my step,  Â
The curl of my lips.  Â
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,  Â
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,  Â
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.  Â
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.  Â
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,  Â
And the flash of my teeth,  Â
The swing in my waist,  Â
And the joy in my feet.  Â
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Men themselves have wondered  Â
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,  Â
They say they still can’t see.  Â
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,  Â
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.  Â
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.  Â
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,  Â
The bend of my hair,  Â
the palm of my hand,  Â
The need for my care.  Â
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
