Legendary musical and lyrical genius, Stephen Sondheim, passed away today. He was known for his work on such Broadway masterpieces as, “West End Storyâ€, “Sweeney Toddâ€, “Gypsyâ€, and many more.
During his life, he won many awards, including an Academy Award, 8 Grammy Awards, 9 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and a Lifetime Achievement Award, among many others.
As a published poet, lyricist and musician — what I loved most about Sondheim’s work was his incredible ability to bring depth and personal emotion into his lyrics. One of his greatest songs, (for which he wrote both the lyrics and music), was “Send In the Clowns.â€
Several weeks ago, I was inspired to write to Mr. Sondheim. I wanted to thank him for the gift of his music and lyrics. But, I had a sense that he might not wish to be bothered by a stranger, so I didn’t do it. Now, I wish
I had. I hope his spirit will Rest In Peace, knowing how much joy he brought to the world, by sharing his song with all of us. Thank you Mr. Sondheim.
